What Is Riyad-us-Saliheen?

Imam An-Nawawi compiled Riyad-us-Saliheen in Damascus in the 13th century as a practical guide to Islamic character and conduct. Instead of arranging the hadith by their narrators or legal chapters, he grouped them by topic, so that everything the Prophet ﷺ taught about one subject is found in one place. The book contains about 1,900 hadith, taken mainly from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, with others from the Sunan collections and the Muwatta of Imam Malik.

Each chapter follows the same pattern. It opens with the verses of the Qur'an on that subject and then gives the hadith that explain and apply them. This is why the book is read in masjids and homes around the world: one short chapter teaches the Qur'anic basis and the Prophet's ﷺ practice together.

How Each Page Is Laid Out

In this Darussalam edition, every hadith appears in two columns: the Arabic text with full vowel marks on one side and the English translation on the other, each with its hadith number. Chapter headings are given in both Arabic and English. After the hadith comes a short Commentary paragraph by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf that explains difficult words, draws out the lesson of the hadith and mentions the rulings it contains. About Imam An-Nawawi

Abu Zakariya Yahya bin Sharaf An-Nawawi was born in Nawa, in present-day southern Syria, in 631 AH (1233 CE) and studied in Damascus, where he later headed the Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyyah. He died in 676 AH (1277 CE) at the age of about 45. In that short life he also wrote the Forty Hadith (al-Arba'in an-Nawawiyyah), a full commentary on Sahih Muslim and al-Majmu', a major work of Shafi'i fiqh.
