Sunan Abu Dawood is one of the six major collections of Hadith and among the four famous Sunan that hold a prominent position. Compiled by Imam Abu Dawood Suleiman bin al-Ash‘ath al-Sijistani (202H–275H), this collection contains 5,274 carefully selected narrations chosen from half a million Hadith.
Imam Abu Dawood focused especially on Hadith related to legal rulings, which became foundational references for jurists and scholars across the Muslim world. In his own words, the collection was compiled to gather Hadith on rulings and jurisprudence, while leaving out many narrations on virtues and asceticism.
Organized into 36 books and 1,871 chapters, Sunan Abi Dawood includes Prophetic Hadith, narrations from the Companions, and reports from the early generations. Its precision and focus have made it one of the most relied-upon sources for deriving Islamic law after Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
