What Is a Qaida?
A qaida is a step-by-step primer that teaches the Arabic letters, their sounds and how they join together, so that the learner can move on to reading the Qur'an itself. In Pakistan, India and the rest of South Asia, almost every child begins learning the Qur'an at home or in the madrasah with a qaida, and many adults who never learned as children start with one too. "Noorani Qaida" and "Qurani Qaida" are both used for this kind of book, and many people search for one when they mean the other.
Darussalam's Qurani Qaida follows the same proven approach and adds clear illustrations and short Tajweed notes, so that teachers and parents can explain not only which letter it is, but also how and from where in the mouth it should be pronounced.
What Is Inside
The book opens with the Ta'awwudh and Bismillah, then Lesson 1, Mufrad Huroof bit-Tarteeb (مفرد حروف بالترتیب), the single Arabic letters in order. They are set out in a colour grid with the name of each letter written beneath it, from Alif to Ya. A short note in Urdu at the top of the lesson tells the teacher what to focus on, for example letters that look alike and differ only in their dots, such as ج ح خ and س ش.
The back cover carries the makharij: illustrated diagrams of the mouth, tongue and lips showing where each group of letters is pronounced, numbered and explained in Urdu. These pictures make it much easier for children to understand difficult sounds such as ض, ظ and ق, and for adults to correct sounds they may have learned wrongly. From there the lessons build up step by step towards reading words from the Qur'an.
How to Teach It to Children
Keep each session short, ten to fifteen minutes a day, and finish one lesson before moving on. Say each letter clearly and ask the child to repeat it while looking at the makharij picture. Point to each letter with a finger as you read, revise the previous lesson before starting a new one, and praise effort, not just correct answers.
For Adult Learners
It is never too late to learn to read the Qur'an. Adults can work through the qaida on their own using the Urdu instructions, but the best results come from reading to a teacher or a family member who reads well, even for a few minutes a day. The illustrated makharij are especially useful for adults, because they show exactly where a sound comes from rather than relying only on listening.
Who This Book Is For
• Urdu-speaking families in the UAE starting their children on the Qur'an.

What to Read After the Qaida
Once the qaida is complete, move on to reading the Qur'an itself with the Mushaf Madinah, and continue Tajweed with Illustrated Tajweed Volume 1. Persian-speaking families can choose the Qurani Qaida in Persian, and for English speakers starting with the short surahs, see Noble Quran Part 30 in English.
